BICSI Outside Plant Designer (OSP) Practice Exam

The minimum expected lifespan for direct buried cables is generally around 20 years. This lifespan is based on several factors that consider the environmental conditions, such as soil composition, moisture levels, and temperature variations, which can all affect the degradation of the cable materials over time.

Direct buried cables are designed with insulation and protective layers that help them withstand outdoor elements, including moisture and temperature variations. Over a period of 20 years, these cables are expected to maintain their performance and reliability, provided that they are installed properly and in suitable conditions. Industry standards and best practices also reflect this lifespan, catering to the needs for long-term installations without requiring frequent replacements.

In contrast, shorter lifespans, such as those indicated in the other choices, do not align with typical expectations in the industry for properly installed and maintained direct buried cables, making 20 years the most appropriate answer. This understanding is crucial for planning infrastructure projects and ensuring that the investments in cable installations meet desired operational timelines.
